The lake's basin consists of farmland that was purchased piecemeal then flooded by the Millstone and its tributary Stony Brook, which enters the lake roughly miles south near Princeton's new Lakeside Graduate Housing. The nearly mile Millstone flows north to join the Raritan River near Manville, New Jersey.

Lake Carnegie is a reservoir that is formed from a dam on the Millstone River, in the far northeastern corner of Princeton, Mercer County, New Delaware and Raritan Canal and its associated tow path are situated along the eastern shore of the lake.
