  The first major river flow to arrive in the Menindee Lakes since has wet soil that has remained dry for years, ending a prolonged period of no-inflows. The water made its way down the Barwon-Darling river system into Lake Wetherell, following good rainfall in February. Menindee is the oldest European settlement in western New South Wales, and the first town to be established on the Darling River.

The first European to visit the area was the surveyor and explorer Major Thomas Mitchell in He was followed by Charles Sturt in and the town was the advance base for the Burke and Wills expedition in LGA(s): Central Darling Shire. Menindee is also the oldest town on the Darling and the oldest town in western New South Wales.
